ARCTIC ADVENTURE 2026

AN AI-ASSISTED REMASTERING OF A 1981 TRS-80 ADVENTURE GAME

BY HARRY MCCRACKEN

Below you'll find a playable version of Arctic Adventure 2026 that works right in your browser. This is a thoroughly modernized, web-native edition of my 1981 TRS-80 Level II BASIC game, with animated color graphics, a much more robust save/load system with five slots, improved and more extensive hints via the radio, an UNDO DEATH feature, and a few other tweaks and enhancements. (You can still play in text mode if you want, including a smartphone-optimized version.)

I used Anthropic's Claude Code to port my ancient and sloppy BASIC code to the web. It got about 80% of it done and produced a first draft of the graphics with almost no instruction from me. I then got more involved to finish up getting the functionality working, refine the graphics, and add animation and other trimmings. It was an exceptionally enjoyable and addictive process, occupying three weeks of my spare time, and you can read more about the experience over at Technologizer.

If you have any comments, suggestions, or bug reports, I'd love to hear from you. Drop me a line.
